MUCHAP/IMHDSS hosted the 15th INDEPTH Annual General Meeting-2016

INDEPTH Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the General Assembly of the Network that takes final decisions on issues tabled by the Board and the Executive Director. The AGM generates the scientific agenda through its working groups and reviews progress of joint work undertaken.

The AGM is held annually on a rotational basis among member countries or sites. So far, these meetings have been held in South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Tanzania, India and Mozambique among others. Usually about 70-100 people attend the AGM which include HDSSs Site Leaders, representative from various development partners and INDEPTH secretariat.

During the Indepth Scientific Conference (ISC) held in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia in 2015, the 3 Uganda HDSS were given an opportunity to host the 2016 INDEPTH AGM. The other HDSS sites are Rakai Health Program/Rakai HDSS and Kyamulibwa HDSS. Prior to this, Uganda was selected to host the 14th AGM in 2014 but due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the meeting was postponed and the AGM for that never took place.

In 2016, the INDEPTH Meeting was held in Kampala and delegates had an opportunity to visit the three research centers. There are a lot of interesting features in the vicinity that made the AGM delegates tour of MUCHAP/IMHDSS memorable such as the Source of the River Nile, The clear blue waters of Lake Victoria, the thick and cool Mabira Tropical rain forest, the large Tea and Sugarcane plantations, the Busoga Kingdom palace, and the hospitality and cultural dances of the people of Busoga Region.
